Salt Lake City, UT: Organizers of the 2008 Utah Pride Festival announced recipients of two prestigious awards today. The awards are given to individuals who service has had a tremendous impact on Utah’s gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender (GLBT) and allied community. Valerie Larabee, Executive Director of the Utah Pride Center, named Stan Penfold as the recipient of the 2008 Dr. Kristen Ries Community Service Award and Representative Carol Spackman Moss as the recipient of the 2008 Pete Suazo Political Action Award.
Stan Penfold is the Executive Director of the Utah AIDS Foundation. He is a current board member of the Utah Nonprofits Association, a member of the United Way Executive Directors Association, and Utah Department of Health Community Planning Committee. In addition to leading his organization’s work surrounding HIV/AIDS prevention and education, Penfold trains several non profit agencies and staff in the use and implementation of outcomes-based evaluation methods and is a professional mentor with the Fieldstone Foundation. Penfold was nominated for the 2008 by Rep. Jackie Biskupski and selected by a body of previous Dr. Kristen Ries Community Service Award recipients for his countless hours of service.
During the 2008 legislative session, Rep. Carol Spackman Moss sponsored Equality Utah’s legislation to address and prevent all forms of bullying and hazing in Utah’s public schools for the second time. This year, HB 325 Bullying and Hazing Prohibitions passed both houses of the Utah legislature and was signed by Governor Huntsman, leading Equality Utah (the state’s leading GLBT political advocacy group) to nominate Rep. Moss for the 2008 Pete Suazo Political Action Award. Representatives from various GLBT organizations including the Utah Stonewall Democrats, Utah Log Cabin Republicans, the Utah Pride Center, Human Rights Campaign, and Equality Utah selected Rep. Spackman-Moss as this year’s recipient.
“The winners of these awards inspire and challenge all of us to reach for the goals and ideals we most cherish,” said Fran Pruyn, Festival Co-Chair. “Their efforts to keep Utah’s communities healthy and our schools safe are truly deserving of recognition.”
The awards will be presented at the Utah Pride Festival’s Grand Marshal Reception, honoring Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker and members of the City Council as the 2008 Grand Marshals at 6:00pm on Friday, June 6 at Trofi in the Hilton Salt Lake Center. Recipients will also be honored on Saturday, June 7 at the Utah Pride Festival’s opening ceremonies and again Sunday, June 8 at the Utah Pride Parade.
