The Utah Pride Center Board of Directors initiates its Selection Committee each fall for the coming calendar year.   Any applications submitted that aren’t during the Open Call performed by the Selection Committee will be retained and provided to the Selection Committee at its inception.

Board Governance

The Utah Pride Center Board of Directors is responsible for developing the Utah Pride Center’s vision and mission, establishing long term goals, raising funds, and assuring financial accountability. Board members are also being developed as leaders through their involvement in various community task forces and community coalitions.

Mona Stevens

Mona Stevens is an award-winning entertainer, teacher and coach, as well as an accomplished speaker, author and Real Estate Professional in Salt Lake City.

During her 27 year career as a coach, she had a track record of building, coaching, and managing top-level athletic teams at the University of Massachusetts–Amherst, at the University of Utah, as well as being one of our USA National Softball Team Coaches, which culminated in her recognition by the United States Olympic Committee as the “National Softball Coach of the Year” in 1997 and for Mona be inducted into the NFCA’s Coaches Hall of Fame in December 2016.

After earning a Bachelor of Science from the University of Utah, Mona taught biological science for 5 years, developing curriculum and piloting new courses, and was named Teacher of the Year.

She is a former President of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA), serving the membership of over 5,000.

Currently she and her business partner Kelly Favero work in the Real Estate industry and hold the honor of being recognized as the highest producing small team for Keller Williams Salt Lake.

On weekends, you can catch Mona performing with her rockin’ blues band Sister Wives.

Christine Decaria

Board Treasurer

Chris Decaria is an engineer and entrepreneur who graduated from the University of Utah with a specialty in biomedical materials and later completed her MBA in business management and marketing from the University of San Francisco.

Chris is a business owner and has been involved in the development of start-up companies. She active in her community both politically and privately participating in fundraising activities and as an activist for LGBTQ+ and women’s issues.

Chris has recently returned from a humanitarian trip in Sicily to aide in the primary integration of displaced people.

She is a musician and has donated a significant amount of time and energy to encouraging and empowering young musicians.

Marci Milligan

Ms. Marci Milligan holds a Bachelor of Science in Social Work, a Masters of Business Administration and a Masters Certificate in Gerontology.

Marci’s diverse background in community organizing and with faith- based communities informed her vision to bring together a group of like-minded and experienced peers to create Lotus Community Development Consulting Services, LLC. Her skills come out of more than 35 years of work in the fields of social work, housing management, non-profit and for-profit multi-family housing development, private consulting with municipalities and non-profit entities, community development banking, and creation of financial services products on the secondary market.

She has worked both in Utah, the Western United States and Nationally gaining expertise in organizational/community planning, small business development in urban and rural settings, affordable housing best practices in leveraging local, state and national lending resources which support emerging small businesses as well as low- and moderate-income minority, special needs and tribal communities.

Marci has assisted in the formation of niche community loan pools, successfully raised resources for a broad range of non-profit programs and capital campaigns. Ms. Milligan is presently a board member of Inside Out Faith and Capital Campaign Chair of the Entrada Institute, Inc. a local arts organization based at the gateway to Capitol Reef National Park.


She holds a strong belief in bringing together community members to identify their collective needs and in creating integrative solutions that uplift individuals, families and neighborhoods while driving affirmative results!

Debby Berdan

Michael is a real estate investor, getting his start in 2001 when he bought an abandoned brick building in Harlem and gut-renovated it, transforming it into a modern apartment building. His current business interests are in Northern Manhattan and the Bronx, New York, and in Salt Lake City.

For most of his career, Michael practiced securities and corporate law in New York City, initially with the law firms of Sidley Austin and Milbank Tweed, and then at the headquarters of both JPMorgan Chase (NYC) and Credit Suisse (Zurich).

Michael is passionate about giving back. While in New York he volunteered with SAGE and was on the Board of Directors of One Stop Senior Services, a not-for-profit assisting seniors on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.

Michael also took a break from being a corporate lawyer for three years while at JPMorgan Chase, as counsel to the JPMorgan Chase Foundation.

Currently he is also on the Board of Directors of the Utah Alzheimer’s Association.

Michael loves to workout, waterski, and discover new places with his Labrador Retriever.

Tanya Hawkins

Tanya Hawkins is a native of the Salt Lake Valley. Tanya enjoys being active in the community and is a patron of the arts, sciences, and outdoors. She invests in her community by being an active council member of the Utah Multicultural Civic Council.

She enjoys spending time with her niece and nephew and introducing them to different ideas and cultures.

She is currently pursuing a degree in Information Technology. Tanya believes that the full value of life is gained by being and embracing yourself. She believes that there is always something positive to be learned from someone regardless of their color, culture, gender, sexuality, beliefs, age, disability, and/or economic background.

Ariel Malan

She – Her – Hers

Ariel is a graduate student at the University of Utah, working towards her Master’s in Healthcare Administration with a passion for mental health and LGBTQ+ populations. She earned her Bachelors of Science in Psychology from Weber State University.

She has volunteered with the National Alliance for Mental Illness since 2008 and is certified as a support group facilitator. Ariel also volunteered with Ogden OUTreach resource center in teaching at-risk homeless youth life skills.

Her primary goal in life is to provide vulnerable populations with the information they need to be advocates for themselves through accessible programs and support systems. She is an active participant in suicide prevention, mental health awareness, and LGBTQ+ rights.

Ariel identifies as a cisgender bisexual woman and embraces the polyamorous lifestyle with her husband Chris.

Tim Johns

He – Him – His

Tim Johns, Vice President of Development for Planned Parenthood Association of Utah, completed his masters degree from New York University in nonprofit management.

Tim began his career in fundraising for various arts organizations

and has worked for such prestigious organizations as The New 42nd Street, the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, International Creative Management.

Tim has been with Planned Parenthood for nearly a decade, beginning with the Central Ohio affiliate and has currently been with the Utah affiliate for three years. Under Tim’s tenure, Planned Parenthood Association of Utah received the Winston E. Forrest, Jr. award for excellence in private fundraising from Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

Michael Iwasaki

He – Him – His

Michael Iwasaki received his Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from the University of Utah, followed by his Juris Doctor degree from the S.J. Quinney College of Law. He is currently working for the State of Utah drafting and negotiating purchasing contracts.

Michael is passionate about community service, having served on the Utah Minority Association Board, Utah State Bar Young Lawyers Division Fit2Practice Committee, And Justice for All Community Center Continuing Legal Education Committee, and Multicultural Engagement for Utah civic engagement coalition. He currently serves as the Co-President of the Salt Lake Chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League.

In his spare time, he enjoys traveling, checking out new restaurants, and catching up on his Netflix watchlist.

Michael is excited to join the Utah Pride Center Board because he recognizes and greatly appreciates the value of the Pride Center and the many services it provides. His hope is that the Pride Center will continue to be a symbol of safety and inclusion for years to come.

Gloria Castaneda

She – Her – Hers

Gloria Castaneda is currently the 2-1-1 Senior Resource Specialist at United Way of Salt Lake (UWSL). The 2-1-1 program is a statewide information and referral system for health and human services connecting individuals and families to much needed resources by phone, chat, email and text.

Gloria assists in the organizing and maintaining of 2-1-1’s database while simultaneously supporting direct service providers by helping them connect with their clients. Her current role in UWSL’s 2-1-1 Department has a focus on continuous improvement and on data visualization and use.

During her 8 years with UWSL’s 2-1-1 program, she has worked in other capacities and feels fortunate to align her education and passion to ensure children and underprivileged communities have access to food, healthcare, education, and security; as well as access to meaningful community data by human services providers.

Gloria holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Westminster College, and a Master’s in International Affairs and Global Enterprise with emphasis in NGO’s. Her drive for community engagement and learning has led her to be part of the Utah Pride Center’s Board of Directors.

Karnell McConnell-Black

Karnell McConnell-Black is a student development professional and organizational ethnographer with 11-plus years’ experience in higher education administration.

He currently serves as the Dean of Students & Interim Vice President of Student Affairs at Westminster College in Salt Lake City, Utah. In that role, he provides leadership for programs and services that enhance student success, student engagement, and student development.

Karnell, a Dallas, Texas native and first-generation college student, attended Loyola University-Chicago, earning his bachelor’s degree in Communication and master’s degree in Higher Education Administration. He is currently a doctoral student at the University of Utah focusing on Higher Education Administration.

Karnell enjoys spending time with his husband (Kelly) and pup (Charlie).

Candice Pitcher

She – Her – Hers

Candice Pitcher is an attorney in the banking and financial services sector.

Candice began her career at Jones Waldo Holbrook & McDonough, where she advised banks, non-banks and other companies within the financial services

industry regarding regulatory compliance and exam management.

Candice has worked as compliance counsel and general counsel at several mid-sized financial services firms. She is currently general counsel of a large real estate investment fund.

Candice graduated from the University of Utah (Go Utes!) and went on to receive her Juris Doctorate from the University of Arizona (Bear Down!).

She lives in Salt Lake City with her wife, Colleen, their twin daughters, and their three fur children.
