A Space For Healing

November 5 @ 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM

|Recurring Event (See all)
An event every month that begins on the first and third Tuesday, repeating until January 20, 2020

Religion has inflicted more harm on the LGBTQ community than anything else.  People of faith, particularly Christians, have used sacred texts to justify everything from discrimination to violence against queer folk.  Even when we finally free ourselves from these belief systems, the hurt and scars can linger and become a heavy weight to carry. We sometimes find ourselves wondering, “what about my faith?”  If we have been raised in a faith community, often there are important life moments that happened in the context of church and many good things from our faith lives have shaped who we are. And yet so often we are made to feel that we cannot draw from our faith experiences and still be true to who we know ourselves to be.  Our relationship with God can be complex and complicated.

If you have struggled to reconcile the faith of your childhood and who you truly are, I am available to hear your story, talk through some of the feeling you might have about your faith life before and after you came out, repent on behalf of religion, look at sacred texts that are affirming or just pray with you.  I am here to tell you that God loves you just the way you are and to help you re-claim some part of the faith that is rightfully yours. I am not here to proselytize, win you over to religion or to promote any agenda aside from healing past hurts. I’d love to hear your story and share some time and space together.  Please feel free to come talk to me during my drop-in time or make an appointment for other times.

Grace and Peace,

Pastor Curtis

Pastor Curtis Price has been a pastor serving in local congregations since 2000.  He was born and raised in Utah but came back here in 2010 to serve as pastor at First Baptist Church of Salt Lake City.  First Baptist is an American Baptist Church and has been an ally in the struggle for LGBTQ inclusion in society and culture for a long time.  First Baptist, like many faith communities in Salt Lake City, is fully inclusive of the LGBTQ community. Pastor Curtis was one of many clergy who ran down to the courthouse when the law banning marriage equality was struck to marry couples before the courts issued a stay.  Pastor Curtis is married to Katy and together they have five wonderful children.
