Vinyasa Yoga, sometimes referred to as Yang Yoga, has roots in India. While there is much conversation about the exact lineage, many attribute Vinyasa Yoga to Patañjali who wrote the Yoga Sutra circa 200 BCE.

Vinyasa is a high-energy rhythmic flow of yoga postures linked together on inhalations and exhalations. We will warm up with some sun salutations, move through series of movements once we get our hearts pumping, and end with a soothing deep rest.

As we practice power poses as a community, we gain confidence and become empowered in our fight against systemic injustice.

Who is this class for?

Vinyasa Yoga for Power is for those looking to get in touch with their strength and power. It’s also a great class for those looking to establish a regular yoga practice! You are encouraged to listen to your body and take breaks as needed. Expert yogis, you are welcome to take on extra chaturangas.

The physical abilities needed for this class include upright trunk stability and active hip/knee/ankle/shoulder/elbow/wrist/neck flexion and extension. This class is also fast paced, sweat inducing, and will likely increase your heart rate.

What will we learn?

We will cover foundational yoga poses, linking them to your breath. We will also discuss the roots of yoga, including the yamas and niyamas.

What will we need?

Clothes you can sweat in. Yoga mat is helpful, but it essentially is just a piece of rubber. Yoga blocks are helpful, and can be replaced with books/water bottles. Yoga strap is optional, and can be replaced with a belt/kitchen towel. Water to replenish your body not optional!

About the instructor:

I’m Karen Tao (she/her). I moved to Utah from Asia in 2000 and found yoga around 2010. It wasn’t until 2020 for me to realize what a lifeline yoga has been for me, when some days all I could do was breathe and be grateful for each breath. I completed my 200-hour yoga teacher training at our local studio Salt Lake Power Yoga where I also teach at. I hope to share this passion with my community and help others deepen their self-love.
