Letter from Jenny to you:
My name is Jenny, and I first walked in the doors of the Utah Pride Center in the summer of 2022. That was the moment my life was forever changed. For the first time, I could be myself without fear of judgment. After my first visit, I went to the UPC every day to volunteer and make new friends who developed to be my chosen family.
In 2019, I was diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). I found myself in and out of hospitals and unable to function. I talked to medical professionals, licensed therapists, and religious leaders, but nothing seemed to help. During this period of my life, I was continuously drawn towards femininity and had dreams of waking up with the body of a cisgender woman. However, I pushed these thoughts away because I was taught that those feelings were evil. This only added to my depression.
For three years, I continued to have these thoughts and feelings. With the assistance of my parents, a new doctor, and a stable job, I was able to come out to myself as a transgender woman. But I had nowhere to go.
And that was when I found the LGBTQ+ community at the Utah Pride Center!
I now work for the UPC, I’ve come out publicly, I’ve started my medical transition, and I’ve never been happier. I haven’t struggled with depression hardly at all since coming out and I’ve found a community of friends who accept me as I am. All of this wouldn’t have been possible if it wasn’t for the support offered by the Utah Pride Center. At a time of desperation where I had nowhere else to turn to, the UPC was there to help me find the support and resources I needed to have the joy-filled life I have today.
The Utah Pride Center provides mental health services, programming, and resources essential to support, empower and celebrate Utah’s diverse LGBTQ+ community. Your generous support through a year-end, tax-deductible gift will directly extend the pride and fulfillment I received at the UPC to the lives of even more Utahns in the community. Thank you.
Everyone at the Utah Pride Center wishes you a joyful holiday season and a happy new year!
With much Love,
Genevieve Stratford (she-her-hers)
