2020 CENSUS – BE COUNTED!
Census Day is April 1st and it’s important that everyone be represented in Utah. The way to do that is by taking the census. Be counted now and make your voice heard, it impacts more than you think. Sign up and we’ll send you a reminder to take the census after it becomes available on March 12th.  The Utah 2020 Census website is now live at https://census2020.utah.gov/ . It features many of the Census Bureau PSAs, downloadable PDFS on frequently asked questions, facts and resources.

Right now the website is only available in English but it is being worked on for Spanish translation and they hope to have it up soon.

FACTS ABOUT PROP 2:  HOW TO ACCESS
LEGAL MEDICAL CANNABIS
IN UTAH

Wait – in Utah?  How do I get it?  Who is eligible?  Is there a secret knock I’ll need to know to get into a dispensary?  Where are the dispensaries?  There are so many questions that need to be answered!

While the Pride Center remains neutral in this and other areas, we are still proponents of providing opportunities to access accurate information.  There are many subtleties of the Utah process that must be followed and we want our community to make informed decisions.

Join Mario Enriquez, President of Utah Patients for Cannabis and Natural Choices, Anna Sierra of the Utah Cannabis Collective and Infinite Possibilities as well as Quintessence Wellness Clinic.  These professionals will answer your questions and provide education on how to navigate the process to obtain your medical card.

April 10, 2020
6:00 pm – 8:00 pm
Utah Pride Center – 1380 Main Street

GOOD GRIEF

Everyone experiences grief at one or more times during their life. There is no right or wrong way to grieve – despite what well meaning friends or family members may tell you or what you may have heard. However, sometimes it is hard to do alone. If you have lost a partner, a spouse, a parent or a child we invite you to join our LGBTQ+ grief support group. This group is facilitated by a hospice chaplain who is experienced in death and the associated grief. Grief is difficult sometimes to process on our own; please join us for support.

SAGE BOOK CLUB FORMAT
IS BEING REWRITTEN!

Welcome Lance and Guy Brady-Sayer as new members of the SAGE Leadership Team.  They will be running our book club and have come up with some great ideas to expand our book club.  Each month we are will have 3 books to choose from.  Read (or listen) to one of the books and come prepared to discuss your choice.  The book choices for April are:

Ready Player One – a 2011 science fiction novel, and the debut novel of American author Ernest Cline. The story, set in a dystopia in 2045, follows protagonist Wade Watts on his search for an Easter egg in a worldwide virtual reality game, the discovery of which would lead him to inherit the game creator’s fortune.  (This was also made into a movie, so if you’d rather, you can watch the movie instead of reading the book.)

Becoming – by Michelle Obama
What’s your journey of becoming? This gorgeous journal features an intimate and inspiring introduction by Michelle Obama and thought-provoking questions and prompts to help you discover—and rediscover—your story.

They Both Die at the End –  By Adam Silvera
On September 5, a little after midnight, Death-Cast calls Mateo Torrez and Rufus Emeterio to give them some bad news: They’re going to die today.
Mateo and Rufus are total strangers, but, for different reasons, they’re both looking to make a new friend on their End Day. The good news: There’s an app for that. It’s called the Last Friend, and through it, Rufus and Mateo are about to meet up for one last great adventure—to live a lifetime in a single day.

Please join us on the 2nd Thursday at 6:00 pm at the Pride Center for a brand new book club!

DO YOU HAVE AN APARTMENT, MOTHER-IN-LAW, CONDO, ROOM OR HOUSE FOR RENT?

If you have space to rent, please send the details to SAGE@utahpridecenter.org and it will be advertised in the SAGE newsletter.

PHONE A FRIEND

Did you know that LGBTQ+ older people are:

      • Twice as likely to be single and live alone
      • Four times less likely to have children/family

IF WE DON’T LOOK OUT FOR EACH OTHER, WHO WILL?

Are you or someone you know lonely, isolating or withdrawing from friends and social situations?  Do you see events or activities that you would like to attend, but can’t or don’t go for one reason or another?  We have resources available to help.  There is a confidential email to reach out for yourself or a friend.  Please email your name and phone number to sage@utahpridecenter.org and someone will contact you.

Please don’t be alone – there is a big community here waiting to welcome you.

Thank you to those on the SAGE Leadership Team who are championing this effort.

SOCIAL SECURITY
BY BARBARA BOLZ

She knows a cashier who
blushes and lets her use
food stamps to buy tulip
bulbs and rose bushes.

We smile each morning as I
pass her – her hand always
married to some stick,
or hoe, or rake.

One morning I shout,

“I’m not skinny like
you so I’ve gotta run
two miles each day.”

She begs me closer, whispers
to my flesh, “All you need,
honey, is to be on welfare
and love roses.”
